TL;DR: A new world on the server, where you get one life and you have to survive for as long as you can. Your score is determined by the amount of XP you have when you die. When you die, you can play again, but start from scratch. The world has custom terrain and custom mob behavior, which you can read below. You should also read the Hardcore World rules.

How to play: You must be registered on this website (otherwise your highscore won't be posted on the front page), and be promoted to a Member rank or higher. Type /starthc to start (or resume) the adventure, /pausehc to pause and go to other worlds on the server, and /infohc to see your score (current XP).

Background: Okay, so Minecraft can get boring and repetitive, and sometimes creative juices are just not flowing. I've been thinking of something new to bring to the server, and I'd like your ideas / thoughts. Tentatively, I'm calling it Steve vs. Hardcore World. ¹

Description: The idea itself isn't new; there are "hardcore servers" out there, where you need to survive, and you are banned when you die. Because we're not banning anyone, we need to raise the stakes.

• Your score is determined by your total XP when you die. The high score will be tallied automatically and posted on this website.
• You can play as many times as you want, but you'll start from scratch every time.
• You start your adventure from a random location. If you die, you start over from another random location.
• The world is not limited, but will get reset every month or so.
• The world will be in hard mode, meaning that: you can die from hunger, and mobs damage you more.
• For starters, there won't be a nether or end world. We'll try it out with a normal world first.
• No warps, no teleports.

• The world will be custom generated, to avoid players cheating by generating their own world using the same seed.

  • Ores are rarer to make it harder.
  • Diamonds no longer spawn in the world.
  • Mob spawners will not appear in the world to prevent mob traps and XP grinders.
  • Because diamonds don't spawn, random enchanting tables may spawn in random locations underground.

• Nether mobs may spawn in the normal world, and give you useful (rare) items.

• Some mobs might ride other mobs, e.g. creeper on a spider, zombie on a blue sheep.
• Some mobs may drop enchanted items, like swords and armor.

• Strategy is a plus:

  • You can make traps, including the reasonable use of TNT and lava. One or two TNTs make a good trap, but dozens of TNT has no other purpose than lagging the server when they detonate.
  • You can team up with other players and share resources, but remember: while it might be easier to kill an enemy with three of you, it also means you need three times the XP.
  • You can build safe houses, but other players may use it if they find it.

• Hostile mobs will no longer burn in daylight.

• You earn a "combo" bonus when you kill more than one hostile mob in a short amount of time.
• Animals (friendly mobs) no longer drop XP when killed, in order to avoid mass-breeding and killing for XP.
• Your items and XP will not drop when you die. This means that you can't steal someone else's items and XP. It also means you can't go back to where you previously died and resume where you left off. You can however keep your items in a chest, but that chest would be free for all; someone else is allowed to steal its contents (if they can find it).

Future ideas:

• Make Endermen be hostile as soon as you're in within a specific range (probably the same range as when other mobs aggro on you), and have some wolves spawn angry. (@starkirby)

As I told Imzo, I think it sounds scary but could be fun if I could play in a group. Maybe after that, I'd try playing by myself. Do you know when you'll be ready to test this new world out?

This would be pretty awesome. Have you thought about making endermen hostile or easier to anger and some wolves spawn angry? Also, signs marking the place players died.

I thought about the wolves spawning angry, but the hostile Endermen sounds good, too. I'll add that to the OP. My only limitation right now is whether or not I can do all this from a plugin or not (from a plugin vs. having to modify the server directly).

I don't think I can change the nature of mobs without making a custom server (not just a plugin)...

Mad cow infection? Maybe if a cow gets too close to a zombie, it will get "infected" and go crazy and start attacking you. But that would be scary.

I started working on custom terrain for the hardcore world, and managed to get some things working:

• Iron and coal spawn about 50% less than it does in a normal world.
• Diamonds no longer spawn.
• Dungeons don't spawn, but strongholds and abandoned mines still do.
• There's a chance for floating islands. I don't 100% like it right now, because they're so thin.
• Mushroom biomes now spawn randomly just like other "main" biomes (taiga, forest, etc.) instead of just in the middle of oceans (so called "isle" biomes).
• Oceans spawn less often.
• Rivers have a chance of being dried up.

Well, I like the shroom biomes, the floating islands, and the dried up rivers, so if I can find a place with a floating shroom island near a dried up river, I'm happy Oh, and I like the "Oceans spawn less" part too.

Nope, Minecraft doesn't have any way to allow you to generate a world like this. I could pre-generate a world, but if you go outside the pre-generated area in single player, you'll see the "regular" terrain. I'm sure there are (single player) mods out there that do something similar.

Another screenshot, this time of some custom pine and giant trees. This is different from the jungle trees in the weekly snapshot (obviously), and they're basically generated with the world (meaning that you unfortunately can't replant them with a sapling, for instance).

Yes, the code has been updated to generate fewer trees, but this will only happen in new areas. It's best to avoid the dense jungles. I've also decided to remove the world border for the hardcore world, with the thinking that the hardcore world will be reset every month or so, and so I'm not too worried about file size.

Also, I patched /starthc and /pausehc to (hopefully) error out less.

So what happened exactly? You were in hardcore, typed /pausehc. Were you teleported to another location in the hardcore world? Were there errors? Did anything else happen (other than the lack of being able to teleport to SV or CR)?

Technically, /pausehc should've taken you to SV. You can't teleport (or warp) directly to other worlds to prevent things from going out of sync (i.e., the plugin thinking you're still in hardcore when you're not), but it seems like it happened anyway.

• Higher chance zombie pig-men (up from 5% to 20%) will spawn as angry.

• A 2% chance of zombies riding other zombies.
• A 0.8% chance of creepers riding a spider.

Well, this stuff is going to make my death about 25% more likely. I guess it's more like proper hardcore mode now though...

I like the idea, but not sure we can at the moment (unless you have an idea on how to do it properly). Having your score posted upon death is really convenient (mainly because you wouldn't notice the lag). It'd be really laggy (for yourself) if your score gets posted every time your XP increases. We also can't post scores every few minutes, because that would only work for as long as you're actually online (meaning that if you disconnected, your score would be zero until you came back online).

Reminder: Hardcore world will be reset sometime today / tonight.

For the purposes of this reset, your inventory shouldn't be lost, so if you want to take anything with you, move them from your chest(s) into your inventory.

Hardcore world reset. HT4 is live:

• New tree types.
• Dig down (around y of 10–15), and find a surprise cave!
• New structures (churches, houses, and forts).

Along with that, vHW v0.11:

• Villagers now have drops.
• Fix XP decay (you should now get slightly more XP compared to HT3).
• Ghasts no longer spawn, because it's just a nuisance, and I can't get the spawn rate just right.

I forgot to tell you this, but I think villagers are dropping potions even in creative mode. I don't know if this was intentional or not...

When is hardcore going to be back? I actually miss it.

Whenever Multiverse comes out with version 2.4, that's when Hardcore will return. The custom plugins are already updated, but without Multiverse, you have no way of accessing the world.

Is it safe to /starthc again?

Yeah, you can play the new hardcore world (/starthc). I just forgot to announce it. It's now called [HW], and 256 high just like every other world. "Sea level" is now at y=128. See photos for some screenies.

• Added exploding sheep and cows. They don't explode immediately, and they don't always explode. Figure it out.

Edit: The explosions are far smaller than that of a creeper's.

The explosions are a fraction of that of a creeper's, so they actually don't do much harm, just surprise you.

Hmm... it might not work with cows that have already spawned... because if you kill a cow, it won't eventually respawn... I think.

Was Multiverse updated or was Hardcore world added another way? I don't know if I'd go there, but whenever the skylands can come back (Are they?), I'd love to go there. I never did get a chance to build there or anything.

Yeah, Multiverse was updated. The "Hardcore" world is its own custom plugin; Multiverse just loads the Hardcore world when the server restarts.

Mojang removed Skylands when they added The End, but some people have made custom Skyland world generators that behave like the old Skylands did.

Nah, not resetting it. Instead, the leaderboard on the homepage only shows the highscores from the latest hardcore world.

Since Hardcore world has been neglected recently (and no one plays it anyway), I'll be discontinuing it once 1.3 comes out.
